Megan Rapinoe is back in the headlines. The famous former professional soccer player is moving into the world of television. Her project is a new romantic LGBT-friendly television show with her wife Sue Bird, a former professional basketball player.

Rapinoe And Bird’s New Show

Rapinoe and Bird’s production company A Touch More has teamed up with the independent television studio Future Shack Entertainment to make Cleat Cute. The show is based on the bestselling novel by Meryl Wilsner. It’s described by Variety as “a contemporary queer romance that follows a young soccer player as she juggles being the new rookie, her goals of making the national team, and a budding romance with her team captain.”

Cleat Cute is set to be A Touch More’s first scripted show.

“Sports is a universal language and breeding ground for world class storytelling,” said Future Shack CEO Jeff Wachtel. “As women’s sports captivate audiences around the globe, we’re proud to partner with two of the most iconic athletes of our time, Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird, to bring Meryl Wilsner’s delightful world to life in a bold, sexy and fun ensemble show.”

Rapinoe And Bird Speak Out

Rapinoe and Bird issued a statement of their own indicating that they could not be more excited about the show.

“Having spent most of our lives on teams, we want to celebrate the ways in which relationships, both romantic and platonic, are organically created through sports,” they said. “Cleat Cute will not shy away from the messiness, occasional frustration, and undeniable beauty that come with loving the game and the players within it.”

When Rapinoe and Bird launched “A Touch More” in December of 2022, they said that their goal in doing so was to tell the “stories of revolutionaries who move culture forward.”

“As athletes, we know how powerful our platforms are and the impact we can have on the world,” they told Variety at the time. “A Touch More is a manifestation of our values, and our desire to bring to the surface stories of those who shape and move culture forward. We’re incredibly excited for some of the projects we have in the works and can’t wait to share more about this next chapter.”

Rapinoe And Bird Partner With TOGETHXR

They launched A Touch More with TOGETHXR, the media and commerce company Bird co-founded with fellow top pro athletes Alex Morgan, Chloe Kim, and Simone Manuel. The idea is a place for Gen-Z and Millennial women where “culture, activism, lifestyle, sports and badassery converge.”

“Megan and Sue both represent the power sport can have on culture,” stated Jessica Robertson, TOGETHXR co-founder and chief content officer. “They also know the power of storytelling. It’s a dream come true for TOGETHXR to partner in bringing this studio to life. We can’t wait for the impact we will make together.”

Rapinoe is a two-time FIFA World Cup-winning soccer star, while Bird is a five-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA champion. It remains to be seen if and when Cleat Cute will actually make it to air.
