Charles Barkley

There’s currently a behind-the-scenes battle for NBA media rights as Amazon Prime Video looks to establish a foothold in basketball streaming coverage. Depending on how negotiations go, this could lead to TNT being squeezed out, leaving Charles Barkley without a job.

Yet, even if TNT loses its NBA coverage rights, Barkley confirmed that his contract includes an opt-out clause that allows him to sign on with another network only if TNT can no longer broadcast basketball games.

If his contract ends, Barkley could become the highest-paid free agent in sports TV history, according to Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy.

FOS’ sources predicted Barkley could command a salary ranging anywhere between $18 and $20 million per season, and he’d be a top candidate to be hired by ESPN, Amazon, and NBC — basically anyone who lands NBA broadcasting rights.

“If Tony Romo is worth $17 million, Charles is worth at least that, or more. Charles is a magnet. He’s loved. And he brings ratings.”

Barkley’s current 10-year contract with TNT pays roughly $10 million per season for a total contract value estimated at $100 million. Yet, if he’s given a chance to negotiate with multiple networks, Barkley could leverage the offers against one another and take the best option available, which is sure to top $10 million per year.

ESPN has reportedly “lusted” after Barkley for several seasons, and their recent agreements with Pat McAfee and Troy Aikman/Joe Buck show the network is more than willing to pay top dollar for premier talent. Whether that remains true with Sir Charles remains to be seen, but technically, he’s not even a free agent yet.
