Golden State Warriors star forward Draymond Green was in the news for all the wrong reasons this past regular season for his on-court antics.

Green, 34, was supended multiple times for being a bit too violent on the court. That included putting Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert into a legitimate chokehold. He was also fined north of $2.5 million for games missed by the NBA.

Even when you take into account Green’s $24.92 million salary for the 2023-24 season, that’s a large figure. Apparently, he’s not happy with it. Would you be?

But like we’ve seen in the recent past, Green simply doesn’t know when to stop while he’s ahead. The four-time NBA champion appeared on Shaquille O’Neal’s “The Big Podcast” recently. To say that he had a rather interesting take about what the NBA has provided him throughout his career would be an understatement.

“The fines to me don’t make sense. You know, when you talk about … as hard as we work to accumulate wealth coming from situations that most people never make it out of, and you get fined the way we get fined. It’s actually not set up for us to be wealthy after we’re done playing. This job is not set up. The way we’re taxed. The way we’re fined.”

Draymond Green on the NBA

For clarity sake, Green was born and grew up in Saginaw, Michigan. Per the United States Census, it’s a city with a poverty rate of 34.5%. The per capita income is under $20,000 in comparison to $37,000 for the United States as a whole.

As for the other points, Green will have earned a total of $255.56 million when his contract with Golden State runs out following the 2026-27 NBA season. Sure, he’s in a high tax bracket. But based on the figures mentioned above, the average American would have to work 6,907 years to earn what Green has throughout his brilliant NBA career.

This past season saw Draymond Green make:

  • $438,000 per game
  • $50,778 per point
  • $16,181 per minute played

Those are just the figures. They are numbers. They are stats. They can’t be disputed.

The NBA sets players of Green’s ilk up for generational wealth. We’re not talking about back of the bench players who earn in the six figures. We’re talking about the LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green type players.

As for the suspensions and fines, the Warriors have noted on multiple occasions that Green needs to control his temper better. Heck, his former teammate in that of Kevin Durant has, too.

“Yeah, that was insane to see. Glad Nurk is alright. Never seen that before on a basketball court in an NBA game,” Durant said of Green back in December. “I hope Draymond gets the help he needs. It’s been incident after incident.
