Pat McAfee made a joke about the extent of his legal knowledge during a College GameDay broadcast, referencing the time Brett Favre filed a lawsuit against him.
McAfee joined former Alabama head coach Nick Saban during Saturday’s coverage of the game between Georgia Tech and Florida State.
The two were discussing a court case involving the NCAA over Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights. Well, Saban was mostly.
“I think this lawsuit’s gonna create some parameters,” he said. “There will be some — people hate to use this term — revenue sharing, but there will be some of that.”
“And Name, Image, and Likeness, there will be some system where you can’t just pay players; their market value has to equal what they’re getting for whatever they do from a marketability standpoint.”
That’s when McAfee offered his wisdom on the matter.
“I’m no lawyer, I’ve been sued by Brett Favre before,” he quipped. “So I’ve been through the entirety of the situation.”

Brett Favre Sued Pat McAfee
Brett Favre filed a defamation lawsuit against Pat McAfee, among others, in February 2023, following comments made by the ESPN personality regarding his alleged involvement in a Mississippi welfare scandal.
Favre has publicly denied any wrongdoing in the case, asserting that he was unaware any funds used to pay his speaking fees were designated for welfare programs.
McAfee had referred to Favre as a “thief” stealing from the poor at the time, which led to Favre’s litigatory response.
Just two months later, Favre withdrew the lawsuit and McAfee issued a public apology for his statements, clarifying that his comments were based on public information and expressed in a comedic style.
“As I have previously stated, I respect the hell out of Brett Favre, the football player, and his Hall of Fame career on the field, and I have no personal knowledge about any case involving Brett in Mississippi,” McAfee said at the time.
No financial settlement was involved.
With the case being dropped, McAfee definitely had not gone through the “entirety of the process” as he claims.

Offers A Shoutout To Lawyers
Perhaps Pat McAfee’s comments weren’t actually meant as a joke. Maybe he was truly citing the lawsuit as evidence of his knowledge when it comes to courtroom cases.
Regardless, he did actually provide a little more input than the Brett Favre joke regarding the legal end of the NCAA/NIL case and what he thinks will happen with the case.
Desmond Howard, who won MVP of Super Bowl XXXI as a kick returner with Favre as his teammate, chimed in by saying he was once involved in a legal dispute with a photographer.
“Hey, shoutout to all the lawyers out there,” McAfee sarcastically responded. “You guys are great.”
Let’s hope Favre doesn’t feel compelled to have a talk with McAfee once again on the matter, with him bringing the lawsuit up for no reason.
The College GameDay host frequently finds himself clarifying remarks, most recently having to address a suggestion he made that God had told him to stop talking about Caitlin Clark.
