Colin Kaepernick and Nessa Diab, his partner for roughly nine years, have written a new children’s book titled, We Are Free, You & Me.

The book is described as an “affirmation of what freedom truly means” and centers on the core principles espoused by their organization, the Know Your Rights Camp (KYRC).

The group describes its mission as an effort to “advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders.”

Kaepernick has long viewed himself as a change leader, having opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers following the 2016 NFL season to pursue a career in activism.

Colin Kaepernick And His Daughter Are Excited About The Children’s Book

Nessa and Colin Kaepernick seem pretty excited about their new children’s book. The two share a two-year-old daughter together.

“As parents, this project has been especially meaningful to us,” they said while announcing the new literary endeavor. “The messages contained in We Are Free, You & Me represent what we aspire to affirm in our own child.”

“The book celebrates a fictional family enjoying a day together in their loving community. We hope this book inspires young people to live in the light of their own strength, truth, and self-worth as they embark on their journey through life.”

In an interview with People, Nessa says their daughter’s favorite parts of the book are “seeing Colin’s face and saying ‘DaDa.'”

Freedom To Breathe

In their discussion with People, the interviewer points out one of their favorite parts of Colin Kaepernick’s new children’s book.

“The ‘freedom to breathe’ line — and that circle of kids who look like they’re meditating — really struck me,” they said. “How do you interpret that line for yourselves?”

“In a fast-moving world that’s only getting faster, sometimes we need to pause. Moments of silence, reflection and meditation can recenter us and make us more balanced and regulated,” Nessa replied. “This is something I have seen Colin do so incredibly well over the years.”

Colin Kaepernick became a figure of controversy when he began kneeling during the national anthem at NFL games to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States.

His actions split fans with some viewing it as a peaceful protest against systemic issues, while others saw it as disrespectful to the flag and the military.

Most though viewed it as his right to protest, but indicated team owners and NFL officials also had the right to stop him from doing so during games.
