Dallas Cowboys general manager Jerry Jones probably thought he was doing something nice for Jimmy Johnson. He probably thought everyone would agree with his take and not question a thing.

As is often the case, Jerry was wrong.

Johnson, a Pro Football Hall of Fame coach renowned for winning two Super Bowls with the Cowboys and a college national championship with the Miami Hurricanes, announced his retirement from Fox Sports on Monday.

He shared the news during an appearance on The Herd With Colin Cowherd, ending a successful 31-year tenure with Fox’s NFL coverage that began when the network first aired NFL games in 1994.

“I’ve made an extremely difficult decision,” Johnson said. “I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years, but I’ve decided to retire from Fox.”

“I’m gonna miss it, I’m gonna miss all the guys but it has been a great run starting 31 years ago.”

Jerry Jones Pays Tribute To Jimmy Johnson

Jimmy Johnson achieved football coaching greatness by winning a national championship with the Miami Hurricanes in 1987. But he truly reached the pinnacle of his career by leading the Dallas Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1993 and 1994.

He took over a team that was 1-15 and, within three years, had turned it into a dynasty. Believe it or not, it was in part thanks to Jerry Jones.

Jones came in like a whirlwind in 1989 and shook up the entire city when he dumped legendary coach Tom Landry in favor of Johnson. The two swiftly built a team that won three Super Bowls (Barry Switzer coached the third) in four years in the early ’90s.

So, it makes sense that Jerry would remark on the retirement announcement.

“From the time we were in college until the time we were holding up those Super Bowl trophies, I knew Jimmy Johnson could be anything he wanted to be, and he has,” Jones wrote. “Some of the most exciting times in my life I shared with Jimmy, and I cherish them.”

“As one of the most gifted people I’ve ever been around, Jimmy has blazed a remarkable, unique trail that is now deeply embedded into football and broadcasting history,” Jones added.

“Congratulations on your incredible career, Jimmy, and I wish you well in your fourth quarter, my friend. You will always be a winner!”

Fans Hijack The Post

As we said, Jerry Jones probably didn’t expect the fan response to his post. But it was almost immediately hijacked by disgruntled Cowboys fans who blame Jerr-uh for running Jimm-uh out of town and, with him, the last time they ever contended for a Super Bowl title.

“Jerry, if you’d kept your ego off the team, you’d have more trophies to hoist. Now you’re the laughing stock of professional sports,” one fan wrote on X. “Congrats!!”

Another surmised, “The reason the Cowboys have sucked for 30 years is because you fired Jimmy.”

And then there was this beauty.

For those fans who think Jerry Jones has done a terrible job running the Cowboys since Jimmy Johnson left, well, he respectfully disagrees.

“So hell no, there’s nobody that could […] come in here and do all the contracts … and be a GM any better than I can,” he said in an interview with DLLS.

And yet, almost every league GM outmaneuvers him every season. If only Jerry would retire.
