Much of the pro wrestling world was outraged at the end of Smackdown on Friday night as the show ended with Cody Rhodes telling WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns that he was coming for his title.

Just not at WrestleMania.

That’s what made everyone angry. For a year plus, fans have assumed – and the WWE and Rhodes – have messaged that “finishing the story” for Rhodes means eventually beating Reigns for the title at the company’s biggest show of the year.

The title his father, pro wrestling icon Dusty Rhodes, was never able to win.

But on Smackdown, Rhodes appeared to step aside – and out came The Rock.

The Rock vs. Roman?

The Rock, after shaking Rhodes’ hand and whispering in his ear, stared down his cousin Reigns without saying a word.

Fans spent the entire weekend making #WeWantCody the most trending hashtag not just in wrestling – but the world – and even seemed to turn on The Rock for taking Cody’s spot.

Fans assumed this would mean it would be Rhodes vs. the WWE’s other world championship held by Seth Rollins.

But on Monday Night Raw, the show kicked off with Seth Rollins coming out, calling out Cody Rhodes to the delight of the crowd – who were both interrupted by Drew McIntyre.

And fans were happy. McIntyre even told Rhodes not to fight Rollins and to go “finish his story.”

Wow!

For now, signs point to a title match between champion Rollins and McIntyre, who is also a former WWE world champion.

Who Will Cody Rhodes Face?

So where does that leave Cody Rhodes for WrestleMania? He could be in a three-way with Rollins and McIntyre.

He could also be in a three-way with The Rock and Roman Reigns.

Rhodes could also be in a singles match with Rock or Reigns on night two of WrestleMania … depending on what happens in a match between The Rock and Reigns on night one.

We are speculating about some of the WWE rumors surrounding Wrestlemania. This storyline can literally go anywhere. McIntyre ended up attacking Rhodes at the end of Raw.

Either way, it definitely seems like the plans for Cody Rhodes for WrestleMania 40 are not set in stone yet.

WWE holds a WrestleMania press conference this Thursday in Las Vegas at 7 PM ET.
